Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds can be used in different various ways, such as helping people with autism. An article from CNN ”iReport: ‘Naughty Auties’ battle autism with virtual interaction”, by Nicole Saidi. From the article it talks about how a virtual world game is helping people with disabilities. Virtual world games were triggering parts of the brain which incorporate social skills. Virtual worlds foster creativity from people being able to socialize with others from team working, as virtual world games require team work to get the full experience of the game. Another way virtual worlds can be used is fashion, instead of purchasing real life clothes users could purchase avatars for their characters changing their look. The article from New York Times by Ruth La Ferla, “No Budget, No Boundaries: It’s the Real you”. The con about it is many people are spending large amounts of money for online avatars. Yes it is cheaper than buying real clothes, but the cost adds up over time, having users spend thousands of dollars for their outfits online. I think the future of the virtual world will be astronomical, where the young generations will start playing these games and will make people more anti-social from wanting to play the game instead of going out with friends. Virtual worlds may help or may destroy someone’s life.
